Credit cards with no annual fee

An annual fee is a yearly charge for keeping a card account open; Chase, Capital One and Bank of America list it in each card's fee table as a dollar amount or as None 1234. Thirty-one of the 45 cards we cover list no annual fee, from all eight issuers we cover 56789101112.

How issuers state the fee

Each issuer uses its own label in the fee table. Chase lists an Annual Membership Fee of None for the Freedom Unlimited, Capital One an Annual Fee of None for the Quicksilver, and Bank of America an Annual Fee of None for the Unlimited Cash Rewards 134. Citi's product page for the Double Cash states the annual fee as None, and American Express's product page says the Blue Cash Everyday has no annual fee 95.

Some terms add a fee for authorized users on top of the annual fee. Chase's terms for the Sapphire Reserve list $795 a year plus $195 per year for each authorized user, and Citi's for the Strata Elite list $595 plus $75 for authorized users 1314.

Cards with a $0 first year

One card in our data waives the fee only for the first year. American Express's terms for the Blue Cash Preferred set a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year of Card Membership, and $95 after that 15. Because the fee applies from the second year, the Blue Cash Preferred is not counted among the 31 no-fee cards, and its card page shows the $95 fee with the first-year note 15.

What an annual fee pays for

The 14 cards that charge a fee range from $39 on the Capital One QuicksilverOne to $895 on the Platinum Card from American Express, and 11 of them list statement credits, each with its own conditions 1617. The Sapphire Reserve's $795 fee comes with a travel credit of up to $300 each account anniversary year for purchases in the travel category, and Priority Pass Select lounge membership 1318. The Venture X's $395 fee comes with a $300 Capital One Travel credit each year, usable only through Capital One Travel and expiring on the next account anniversary 1920. On the $895 Platinum Card, the $200 airline fee credit requires enrollment and covers incidental fees from one selected airline 17.

At the $95 level, the Sapphire Preferred includes up to $100 in statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel 221. The QuicksilverOne and SavorOne each charge $39; they are credit-building cards, and Capital One lists automatic consideration for a higher credit line in as little as 6 months 16222324.

What the card pages show instead of welcome offers

We do not publish welcome offers, sign-up bonuses or interest rates, including intro APRs, because they change often and depend on the applicant. Each card page shows the annual fee and the foreign transaction fee with their sources, the earning rates with their caps, every benefit and statement credit the issuer lists with its conditions, and a link to the issuer's official card page. The issuer's own application page is the place to read the current offer and rates.

Eleven of the 31 no-fee cards also charge no foreign transaction fee, including the Chase Freedom Flex, Wells Fargo Autograph and Capital One VentureOne 8252627. Other no-fee cards charge a foreign transaction fee, such as 3% of each transaction converted to U.S. dollars on the Wells Fargo Active Cash 12.
