What the benefit pays

This is not reimbursement of costs but a fixed benefit amount, reduced for some losses. Chase's Sapphire Preferred guide pays 100% of the maximum for loss of life or of both hands, both feet or sight of both eyes, 50% for one hand, foot, eye, speech or hearing, and 25% for the thumb and index finger of the same hand, and the loss must occur within one year of the accident 1. Capital One's Discover Network guide uses the same full, half and quarter scale and the same one-year rule 2.

The maximums vary widely. Bank of America lists up to $1,000,000 on the Premium Rewards Elite, Capital One's Visa Infinite guide up to $1,000,000 on the Venture X, and Wells Fargo up to $1,000,000 per account on the Autograph Journey 347. Chase's guides pay up to $1,000,000 for common carrier accidents on the Sapphire Reserve and $500,000 on the Sapphire Preferred, and both add a 24-hour travel accident benefit of $100,000 for accidents during the trip, limited on trips longer than 30 days 81. U.S. Bank's Altitude Connect guide pays up to $1,000 6.

Capital One's guide for the Quicksilver, QuicksilverOne, Savor, SavorOne, Venture and VentureOne pays up to $1,000,000, but it covers Discover Network accounts only 2. Capital One does not state which network a new account is issued on and tells cardholders to check the logo on the card or the statement 9.

When and whom it covers

Common carrier coverage applies while riding in, boarding or leaving the carrier. Chase's and Capital One's Discover Network guides extend it to public carriers or courtesy transportation directly to or from the airport, terminal or station immediately before or after the flight, and to time spent at the airport 12. Chase covers the trip when all or a portion of the fare is charged to the card or paid with its rewards, while Capital One, Bank of America, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo require the entire fare 12367. Capital One's Discover Network guide insures you, your spouse and unmarried dependent children, and caps payments for several deaths in one accident at two times the benefit amount; Chase's guide applies the same two-times limit per account 21.

Exclusions and claims

Illness is not covered. Chase's and Capital One's Discover Network guides both exclude losses from illness, disease or pregnancy, suicide or self-inflicted injury, war, commuting between home and a regular workplace, and acting as a pilot or crew member 12. Chase also excludes illegal acts, motorized races and professional sports 1.

Chase and Capital One both ask for notice within 20 days of the accident or loss, or as soon as reasonably possible 12. Chase then asks for documents within 90 days, including a description of the loss, the travel itinerary, a police report, the death certificate where it applies and a statement showing the fare was paid with the card; it pays loss of life benefits to the traveler's estate 1. Capital One pays loss of life benefits to the beneficiary the insured designated or, without one, to surviving family in a set order 2.
