Credit cards with travel and emergency assistance

Travel and emergency assistance is a phone line that connects a cardholder who is away from home with local medical, legal and travel help; it refers and coordinates, and the cardholder pays for the services themselves 12. Of the 45 cards we cover, 24 list it, including four American Express cards and cards from Chase, Capital One, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo and Bank of America 34562.

What the service does

Chase's Sapphire Reserve guide describes a line that connects a covered traveler with local emergency and assistance resources 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and states that the services provide assistance and referrals 1. It lists emergency message relay, medical referral with monitoring and follow-up, and legal referral to English-speaking attorneys and U.S. embassies and consulates 1. Wells Fargo's guides add emergency transportation, ticket replacement, a lost luggage locator, translation, prescription assistance and pre-trip information 2. American Express's Global Assist Hotline offers coordination such as lost passport replacement help, translation, missing luggage assistance and emergency legal and medical referrals while the Card Member is more than 100 miles from home 7.

Who pays for the help

For all 24 cards, the issuer's terms leave the cost of the actual services with the cardholder. Chase's guide says the covered traveler is responsible for the cost of any medical, legal, transportation, cash advance or other services or goods provided, and the U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo guides use the same wording 162. American Express offers the Global Assist coordination at no additional charge but says Card Members are responsible for third-party providers' costs; the Platinum Card's Premium Global Assist guide says Card Members may be responsible for them 78. Bank of America's Premium Rewards page states that the cost of any goods or services is the cardholder's responsibility 9.

A call to the line is therefore not a claim. Medical bills, evacuation or trip costs are paid only under a separate benefit, if the card lists one.

Eligibility and how to reach the line

Amex requires that the trip started from the Card Member's U.S. billing address within the past 90 days and be more than 100 miles from it 7. Capital One's Discover Network guide makes the services available to cardholders of an eligible card issued in the United States, and to their spouse and dependent children 5. U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo cardholders call the Benefit Administrator at 1-800-992-6029; Wells Fargo's guides give 1-804-673-1675 for collect calls from outside the U.S. 62. Chase cardholders use the number in their card's Guide to Benefits 1.

How the cards differ

For the Venture, VentureOne, Savor, SavorOne, Quicksilver and QuicksilverOne, our data comes from Capital One's guide for these cards on the Discover Network, with benefits in effect as of 02/01/2026, and applies to Discover Network accounts only 5. Capital One tells cardholders to find their card's network from the logo on the card or the account statement 10. The Venture X is covered by Capital One's Visa Infinite guide, which states benefits in effect as of 10/01/21 11. Among the Amex cards, the Gold, Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred use the Global Assist Hotline, while the Platinum's Premium Global Assist Hotline adds possible no-cost emergency medical transportation when the hotline approves and coordinates it 38.
