What to know about the Customized Cash Rewards
The six choice categories are Gas & EV Charging Stations (the default at account opening), Online Shopping, Dining, Travel, Drug Stores, and Home Improvement/Furnishings 2. You can switch categories once per calendar month in Online Banking or the Mobile Banking app, and the category stays the same if you make no change 2. The 3% choice category and the 2% grocery and wholesale club category draw on one shared $2,500 quarterly cap, after which those purchases earn 1% until the next calendar quarter begins 2.
Online Shopping counts only purchases made through a website or app, not orders by phone or mail or purchases made in person, and superstores and drug stores that sell groceries do not count toward the 2% grocery category 2. Eligibility follows the merchant's category code, so a purchase can earn 1% even when the store seems to fit a bonus category 2.
Cash rewards can be taken as a statement credit, a deposit to an eligible Bank of America checking or savings account, credit to a Merrill Cash Management Account or 529 account, a check, or payment at Amazon.com or PayPal 2. Statement credits and one-time deposits have no minimum; checks, 529 contributions and automatic deposits require $25, and rewards do not expire while the account stays open with active charging privileges 2.
BofA Rewards, which took the place of Preferred Rewards on or about May 26, 2026, adds a 10%, 25%, 50% or 75% bonus to rewards on eligible cards depending on tier 73. Joining requires an eligible Bank of America checking account; the Member tier has no minimum balance and the higher tiers start at $30,000, $100,000 and $1,000,000 in combined balances 4. The card charges a 3% foreign transaction fee, and its terms say other benefit details accompany new account materials 2.
