Credit cards with trip delay insurance

Trip delay insurance reimburses reasonable expenses such as meals and lodging when a common carrier trip paid with the card is delayed for a covered reason past a set number of hours 12. Of the 45 cards we cover, 10 list it: the American Express Gold and Platinum, both Bank of America Premium Rewards cards, the Capital One Venture X, both Chase Sapphire cards, the Citi Strata Premier and Strata Elite, and the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect 345678910.

How the waiting period and limits work

The published guides set a minimum delay before coverage starts. Chase's Sapphire Reserve guide sets more than 6 hours or an overnight stay, and the Sapphire Preferred guide more than 12 hours or an overnight stay, each paying up to $500 per covered traveler per trip 111. Capital One's Visa Infinite guide for the Venture X also uses more than 6 hours or an overnight stay, with up to $500 per purchased ticket and one claim per covered trip 6. Bank of America lists up to $500 per ticket after more than 12 hours on the Premium Rewards and after more than 6 hours or an overnight stay on the Premium Rewards Elite 45.

American Express pays per covered trip rather than per ticket: up to $500 after a delay of more than 6 hours on the Platinum and up to $300 after more than 12 hours on the Gold, with a limit of 2 claims per card per 12 consecutive months 122. U.S. Bank's Altitude Connect guide pays up to $300 per purchased ticket after more than 12 hours, one claim per covered trip 10. Citi lists trip delay on the Strata Premier and Strata Elite as secondary coverage but does not publish the waiting period or limits on its public pages 1314.

Covered causes and what must be paid with the card

The delay has to come from a listed cause. Chase's Sapphire Preferred guide names equipment failure, inclement weather, strike and hijacking or skyjacking, and U.S. Bank's Altitude Connect guide lists the same four hazards 110. American Express names inclement weather, terrorist action or hijacking, the carrier's documented equipment failure, and lost or stolen passports or travel documents 2.

Chase covers the trip when all or a portion of the common carrier fare is charged to the card or paid with its rewards, and the Venture X and Altitude Connect guides also accept a portion of the fare 1610. American Express requires the full cost of the covered trip charged to the card, alone or combined with its points 2. Chase's guide defines a common carrier as planes, trains, ferries and cruise ships, not taxis, rental cars, rideshare, commuter rail or commuter buses 1.

What is not covered

American Express and Capital One's Visa Infinite guide both exclude delays from a cause that was made public or known to you before departure, and expenses paid before the trip 26. The benefit is secondary or supplemental: Chase and American Express pay in excess of what the carrier or other insurance reimburses, and the Venture X guide reimburses expenses not covered by the carrier, another party or your own insurance 126.

How to make a claim

Keep itemized receipts and ask the carrier for a written statement of the reason for the delay; Chase's guide lists both, along with the itinerary and a card statement showing the fare 1. Chase asks for a claim within 60 days of the delay and documents within 100 days 1. The Venture X guide asks for a call within 30 days and a completed claim form within 90 days, and American Express asks for notice within 60 days and proof of loss within 180 days 62.
