How the daily benefit works

Where the terms are published, the benefit pays a daily amount for a limited number of days once the bag is late by a set time. Chase's guides for the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve pay up to $100 a day for up to 5 days when checked baggage is delayed or misdirected more than 6 hours 16. Bank of America lists up to $100 a day for up to five days on the Premium Rewards when bags are delayed more than six hours, and states that coverage is secondary to the common carrier 4. For the Premium Rewards Elite, Bank of America describes coverage in excess of other insurance but publishes no limit 5.

Capital One's guide for the Quicksilver, QuicksilverOne, Savor, SavorOne, Venture and VentureOne pays $100 a day for up to 3 days, $300 in total, once checked baggage is more than 4 hours late, and applies the maximum to you and to each immediate family member whose ticket was bought with the account 2. That guide covers Discover Network accounts only; Capital One does not state which network a new account is issued on and tells cardholders to check the logo on the card or the statement 7.

Who and what is covered

Chase covers the trip when all or a portion of the common carrier fare is charged to the card or paid with its rewards, and Capital One's guide also accepts a portion of the trip cost 12. Chase's guide covers essentials such as toiletries, a change of clothes and chargers for electronic devices, limited to one per device, and gives no coverage once the traveler is back at the point of origin 1. Capital One's guide likewise applies only at a destination other than your permanent residence 2.

Both guides treat the benefit as secondary: Chase pays in excess of other insurance or reimbursement from those responsible, and Capital One pays the excess once all other reimbursement is exhausted 12.

What it does not cover

Chase's Sapphire Preferred guide excludes hearing aids, dental and prosthetic devices, tickets, money and documents, business samples, jewelry and watches, cameras and other electronic equipment, and recreational or sports equipment 1. Capital One's Discover Network guide excludes business items, cell phones, eyeglasses and contact lenses, cameras and electronic equipment, property shipped as freight, and items that were not in the delayed checked bag 2.

How to make a claim

Report the delay to the airline or other carrier before leaving the airport and keep the report; Chase's guide makes reporting to the carrier a condition of the benefit 1. Chase and Capital One both ask you to contact the benefit administrator within 20 days and send documents within 90 days 12. Their guides list itemized receipts for the essentials, the carrier's written confirmation of the delay and its settlement or denial, the itinerary or proof of ticketing, and a card statement showing the fare 12.
